Numerous surprises transpired in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, but perhaps none was more head-spinning than the Green Bay Packers' decision to trade up to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the No. 26 overall pick.
General manager Brian Gutekunst drafting the team's supposed QB of the future months after getting dismantled in the NFC Championship Game is inexplicable. Still, he probably stood by his heavily-ridiculed decision, right?
Not exactly. On the contrary, Gutekunst's comments are guaranteed to infuriate Packers diehards.
Wisconsin natives are some of the most loyal fans in the world of sports, but we wouldn't at all fault them if some threatened to root for another squad. That's how maddening these quotes are.
If you plan to have Aaron Rodgers as your starting gunslinger "for a while," then why didn't you get his 36-year-old self some more help on the perimeter? Nine wide receivers were drafted on Day 1, and Green Bay still would've had its pick of the litter at No. 26.
And if Gutenkust feels that Love isn't Rodgers' like-for-like replacement down the road, then why draft him? We get that's a heavy burden to put on the shoulders of a 21-year-old, but also having zero conviction in the draft pick is reprehensible on his part. Did you just trade up for Taysom Hill?
Let it all out, Packers fans. This is a safe place.
